A Certified Primitive Reflex Clinical Specialist is a healthcare professional trained to assess, diagnose, and treat retained primitive reflexes. Primitive reflexes are automatic, involuntary movements originating in the brainstem that are present in infants but typically integrate or diminish as a child grows. These reflexes are crucial for early development, but when they fail to integrate properly, they can lead to various developmental, sensory, behavioral, and learning difficulties.

Primitive Reflexes

Primitive reflexes are not a common topic among parents, or even with their
child’s doctor, but they should be.
You may have never even heard of primitive reflexes, which is not unusual.
Parents of a newborn baby see and observe primitive reflexes in action every day and
all day long. Primitive reflexes are automatic, involuntary actions all infants are born
with, and they signify that life is progressing as it is supposed to. Babies are born with
around 40 primitive reflexes with many existing in the womb and allow a newborn baby
to initiate and carry out specific and preprogrammed movements that sustain life
through those first few months. All newborns need primitive reflexes to perform
necessities of life such as breathing, feeing, smiling, filling a diaper – until their brains
and central nervous systems grow enough to figure it out on their own. Once they figure
it out on their own, voluntary action takes over and primitive reflexes integrate. Primitive
reflexes never really go away, rather, they are integrated into the central nervous
system when intentional movements take over.
A majority of primitive reflexes naturally are integrated after the first few months,
and all of them are expected to face away on or about the time a child reaches their first
birthday. Sometimes, integration is delayed or does not happen at all. Retained primitive
reflexes are the most important sign of neurological development going off course,
alongside missed milestones.
Think if primitive reflexes as the brains initial operating system. The software is
pretty basic, but as the brain grows and matures, it requires upgrades for rolling over,
sitting up, crawling, and walking. The more the brain develops, the more complex the
operating system needs to be. Primitive reflexes allow newborns to initiate movement
and sense the world around them, but like all software, it becomes outdated with age.
As the brain matures and becomes more sophisticated, it wants to write over the old
operating system – the primitive reflexes – with a new operating system with more
motor-drive movements. If primitive reflexes do not integrate, more mature motor-drive
movements cannot happen.

Common Red Flags for Possible Retained Reflexes
 Skipped, delayed, or improper crawling
 Missed or skipped milestones
 Sensory seeking, sensory avoidant, or sensory sensitivities
 Picky eating
 Anxiety
 Speech and feeding issues
 C-section birth
 ADHD-like symptoms (fidgeting, inability to sit still or concentrate, impulsivity
etc.).
 Bladder control issues and bedwetting
 Messy and illegible handwriting
 Fight or flight, easily startled
 Significant mood swings
 Poor posture and gait with low muscle tone
 Clumsy
 W-sitting consistently
 Toe walking
